RO1 Grants and Wilms Tumor Research

A Decade of Setbacks and Why These Critical Funding Gaps Matter

Here’s the heartbreaking reality: Wilms tumor, the most common abdominal childhood cancer & most common tumor affecting the kidneys, hasn’t received an R01 grant in over 10 years.

Every child deserves the best chance at a future, and research is how we get there. We can—and must—change this.

What is an R01 Grant?

An R01 grant is a prestigious funding award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that supports critical, cutting-edge research. The bread and butter of research grants. It’s designed to provide the resources researchers need to explore innovative ideas, solve pressing medical challenges, and improve treatments.

Why Does It Matter for Wilms Tumor Research?

Here’s the heartbreaking reality: Wilms tumor, the most common abdominal childhood cancer & most common tumor affecting the kidneys, hasn’t received an R01 grant in over 10 years.

This means that for more than a decade, there’s been a lack of federally funded, large-scale research to push boundaries, refine therapies, and uncover breakthroughs for kids diagnosed with Wilms tumor. Further making more effective, less toxic treatments unavailable for these kids and relying on outdated options that are not always effective and very often, contributing to poor quality of life for survivors.

What might this mean going forward with current and quickly changing funding for the NIH programs?

We can—and must—change this. Every child deserves the best chance at a future, and research is how we get there. Supporting advocacy and funding for pediatric cancer research, like Wilms tumor,  isn’t just a priority—it’s a necessity. With the current and quickly changing funding to NIH grants and programs it highlights the importance of donations specifically and directly to fund these scientific research projects our children and adolescents need now more than ever. Universities, medical centers, and other research grant recipients, are all slated to have their funds cut by large percentages. Cuts that directly impact critical advancements that we already knew were severely underfunded.

Together, we can raise awareness, demand change, and ensure no child is left waiting for hope but allows us to ‘let kids be kids and live long, healthy lives unimpeded by childhood cancer.

Faces of just a few of those we have lost in the last 5 years from Wilms tumor.

Many parents were told “it’s the good kind of cancer“, or things like, “it’s wimpy [wilms tumor].”
